Healthy Ingredients

Looking for some Fourth of July recommendations? Here are just a few… but DO check out the entire list of over 200 hundred chemical-free products and produce from local urban farmers and small business entrepreneurs. Your support is much needed!
The seafood from Madeira Beach Seafood surpasses any we’ve sold before. You can practically taste the Key West Pinks just looking at them. Each shrimp is individually frozen and then bagged so you don’t have to cook them all at once.
The beets from Faithful Farms are wonderFul roasted, juiced, or fermented. Have you made your beet chips yet?
Lake Kersey Farm‘s 100% grass fed, grass finished beef short ribs cook great in a crockpot after browning them. I stir in a little beef base, a small touch of black bean paste, good catsup or tomato paste, and tart cherry juice. Both Pioneer Settlement Garden and *Nathan’s Natural Veggies* are providing beautiful pumpkin squashes. Great roasted and if you take it a step further you can puree the leftovers into a soup and serve chilled. Cook some ginger into the soup first.
The Faith House Garden has beautiful Genovese basil for pesto and Toad Stool Ponds always has incredible chives with generous portions.

Message from Your Market Manager

Hi Folks: Please don’t miss the info on our summer hours below, an important question about fruit for our Market, and a request for delivery volunteers… Have a safe & restful Fourth of July!

SATISFACTION GUARANTEED
Our Market has high standards for what it sells. Despite that—as seasons transition—the challenges of evolving weather and pesky insects can take its toll on the crops. Market Growers are being very selective about what they are willing to present to you. No, it won’t always be picture perfect (which is part of its charm) and sometimes an insect is going to evade capture! But we won’t send you anything that we wouldn’t eat ourselves. If for any reason we have goofed and you are dissatisfied, please report it to me right away so we can rectify the situation. That’s how we get better and we all benefit from that. Your satisfaction is key to our success as a resource for St. Petersburgs’ lovers of chemical-free, organically & locally grown vegetables. This week we have a great variety of spinaches, squash, and new seedlings on the Market. You’ll find no curly green kale or string beans posted today but we may be posting some beans before Wednesday at which point I’ll send out an announcement.

NEW CO-OP St. Pete Locally Grown is now delivering to the Disston Heights Neighborhood in the vicinity of 39th & 39th! Delivery fee is $4. Just submit a comment with your order and we’ll send you the details for picking up there on Friday.

CLOSING FOR WEEK OF JULY 4TH
With the 4th on a Friday it’s not possible to work out the logistics for delivering on a Holiday. Please order what you need this week. MOST all produce and products will keep AT LEAST two weeks if not three.

SUMMER HOURS
This summer we will close one week of each month until around October. This is our way of “beating the heat” & still providing convenient service and excellent produce to our customers all summer long. As many of you can attest, the produce is so fresh that much of it generally lasts as long as 3 weeks. That’s what happens when produce is harvested fresh to order for you! Our first week off will be next week for the Fourth of July. When the Market re-opens on Monday, July 7th, I will publish the summer schedule which is currently being finalized. In the meantime, please call Tina if you need help figuring out what will keep. 727-515-9469

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN FRUIT?
Everything we wanted to order this week was only available from Mexico. This continues to be a dilemna for us. All fruit we buy is USDA Certified Organic but much is grown in Mexico and at certain times of the year is imported from other countries besides Mexico. The explanation I am getting is that, due to extensive drought conditions on the USA West Coast and elsewhere, growers are gravitating to grow in Mexico and other foreign countries with similar climates as an extension of their USA operations. Unless we can all move beyond the stigma of purchasing imported fruit, it is quite possible we won’t have the supply of fruit we have come to expect year round unless we can grow it locally. Yes, we do pursue Florida fruit whenever possible! I am wondering… If I purchase imported fruit from outside the USA and it is grown by a USA-based Certified Organic Grower, will you purchase it?

CALL FOR FRIDAY DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS
We are in great need of volunteers to help deliver fresh, gorgeous produce to St. Pete customers on Fridays between 1pm and 530pm. We have two shifts of teams to build for the summer and our 1-hour training program will guarantee that you have fun in the process of meeting grateful customers and seeing other parts of St. Pete you haven’t visited yet. Please call Tina at 727-515-9469 to discuss what is involved.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS!
Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.

Upcoming Events

All these and more are posted on our Calendar of Events

WORKSHOPS & EVENTS

  • “Monthly Potluck Social”, June 28th, Garden Tour Begins at 5:30PM for active Market customers, growers, and volunteers. BY Whoozin.com e-vite ONLY. Come meet your fellow Locavores! Our Speaker is Monica Leonard of Molly’s Suds. She will educate us on the importance of using chemical-free products on our pets and ourselves. The premise for her company? “There are 80,000 chemicals used in the USA and only 200 have been tested for human safety, and of those only on men, not women or children!” Monica’s products are sold nationwide, at local health food stores, AND on stpete.locallygrown.net.

We are currently organizing our volunteer needs by Grower and by Market. Northeast Georgia Locally Grown:  Locally Grown - Availability for June 25, 2014

Hey Local Food Lovers,

We’re a little late with the message this week, but luckily eight and half hours is still a long time to get your orders in for pickup this Wednesday. Hopefully this quick e-mail is a good reminder that there’s oodles and oodles of good local food this week for the getting. So put in an order if you haven’t, or add to your order if you reduced the fridge down over the weekend.

For those who may still be trying to learn the navigation of the Locally Grown website we have something that can help. Andrew Linker, our new Gainesville Market Manager put together this great little tutorial that should help you find what you’re looking for a little faster. He’s planning to do some other web videos that may speed up your understanding of this great system for ordering local food from dozens of farms.

CLICK HERE for the YOU TUBE VIDEO on how to find products on Locally Grown

Today is the LAST DAY to order GEORGIA MOUNTAINS FARM TOUR passes through Locally Grown. This is the EASIEST way to get your passes and brochures so just click on your cart and you’ll get your brochure with your food on Wednesday (but write a separate check for $35 to GMFN). This event is the only occasion all year to get to visit the farms that grow the food for Locally Grown (as well as several other great Georgia Mountain Farms that don’t sell to Locally Grown).

The spring items will be fading fast from the market with all this heat so items like cabbage, kohlrabi, carrots, swiss chard, rhubarb, and more will be disappearing one by one. Enjoy them now while you can. I did this past Friday with some incredible cole slaw on a SLAW DAWG.

The cole slaw recipe is posted on our facebook page so go check that out if you’re a coleslaw fan.

We’ve been watching with great interest as our Gainesville Market slowly gathers speed. We now have 43 individuals signed up for the market to receive these e-mails. This week we’ve got 10 orders for that location so far. Not too shabby! We’re also slowly getting to know the folks who are returning each week which is fun. Our other market locations definitely consist of a core of regulars who we see week after week and exchange recipes with, life stories, and a sense of common community that loves good food from great farms.

We hope all the new folks are enjoying it so far, and don’t be afraid to share with us your thoughts. This market keeps evolving as it grows and some of the best ideas we’ve had originated from customers.

PS – It was mentioned to us that some people are confused by the long list of items attached to this e-mail. That’s just for quick reference if you’d like to see if we have a specific item available this week. TO ORDER YOU ALWAYS want to click on the link below that takes you to our website. Log in and start shopping.

Ok, that’ll do it for this week. Thanks for EATING LOCAL and……

EAT WELL,

Justin in Habersham

South Cumberland Farmer's Market:  Debit and Credit Cards Can Be Processed -- and Call for Paper for Recycling

Yea ! ! We can finally offer Credit and Debit Card processing again: VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and AmEx.

The extra good news is that we can lower the gratuity we ask for processing from 3.5% down to 2.75%. Every little bit helps, right?

Also, it took us nearly a year to use up the generous donations of printer paper (printed on only one side), but we are nearly out. If you can help us out here, we greatly appreciate it. Just bring your donations to Market — or the Taste of the Market on Saturday (noon to 4:00 p.m.). Or if that’s not convenient, e-mail us back and we will arrange to pick it up.

South Cumberland Farmer's Market:  This Saturday -- Taste of the Market and Art in the Market !

This Saturday from noon till 4:00 p..m. we will again host Taste of the Market, as well as Art in the Market. Our Growers and Artisans will have what they grow and make available for tasting and for sale.

Art in the Market will have a variety of art displayed and also for sale — sculpture, paintings, fiber art — Don’t miss it.

It’s free! And we will have water and soft drinks available for purchase.

State Representative David Alexander will be on hand from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

Plus, the Sewanee Time Bank will be available to answer questions about how the time bank works, how you can help, and how it can benefit you. You will be able to sign up on the spot. It is easy, it is beneficial, and it is FREE!!!!

See you there!

Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

We have NEW FARMERS to welcome to our market this week.
First up is Hillyard Farms from right here in our beloved Caldwell County. Jeremy works at the Sheriff’s office and is farming in his spare time. He has delightful squash this week, but is anticipating corn and melons later in the season.
I have been trying to recruit Twin Willows Farm since we opened last year. Their blueberries are one of the best berries I have tasted. Sweet and early these berries will not disappoint. They are only available a short while so get them while you can. If we can convince Lisa that we have a viable market worth the travel, they will also offer peaches and apples as the season continues.
I think I have finally mastered the credit /debit card issue. We will trial it this week and cross our fingers that I have figured it out. You will need to use your card online at the checkout point. I DO NOT HAVE A WAY TO PROCESS CARDS AT THE MARKET YET. As a small sustainable market we cannot afford to pay any extra dollars out, so we will be passing the 3.5% charge the company charges us, onto the customer using the debit/credit card feature. We still accept cash and check at the market, but I know for some it is convenient to pay by debit/credit cards.
See you at the market on Friday,
Angela

Champaign, OH:  The Weight

I picked up my bag and I went lookin’ for a place to hide…(The Band-The Weight)

Well, I bring you this Monday morning weblog from my morning office aka my lovely front porch. I should be busy baking, busy racing around, busy scanning and emailing forms for Art Affair, emailing minutes and an agenda to members of another board that I serve on, getting my daughter ready to move to Knoxville, catching up on the one million things that make up my life.

But, other plans must have been in store for me and well for my surrounding area of the county. We are all without power. At first, I was highly annoyed, highly paranoid about not being able to start my mountain of obligations.

Then, I wandered out to my front porch with the only cup if coffee I managed before the power went out, and I sat on the front step. My face is drinking in the early sunshine, I am listening to birds, enjoying the view, and realizing that for just this moment, I am enjoying not having the weight of things calling my name.

Sometimes we have to be forced into a timeout from life to make us just sit, think, breathe, regroup.

This cannot happen, often, but today, just for a moment, I just really needed the time.

Take your own time, today, and look at our market offerings. Think about how ordering can take a huge weight off of you and your week.

Taking that small step can free you and your mind. Go ahead..
