Volunteers Needed

My heart is warmed by the response to the request for volunteers and we are slowing getting to the point that folks can work just once a month! We still need a few more folks to make that a reality, so if you are interested, please contact Market Chance Claar-Pressley, who is coordinating the volunteers for me. Thank you Chance! You can email Chance at chancita@gmail.com . Chance tells me that we do need volunteers for July 3rd Market. I realize that the next day is a holiday, but if you could spare a couple of hours, it would be greatly appreciated!

“Thank yous” go out to Kathy and Keb Barnes, Susan Coker, Geni and Bruce Wallace and their sond and Marie Wheeler of Bakery on Brooks who all helped out at the Lilburn Market on Thursday.

Sarah Rockey ws under the weather this past Wednesday, but Marie Wheeler jumped right in to help me get all of the items over to the Hamilton Mill Market! What a life-safer she is – always willing to help out and go the extra mile – plus she makes scrumptious Gluten Free Bakery items! Once we arrived at Hamilton Mill, Karen Thain and her two sons helped get the Market setup and ready for folks to pickup their items! Lisa Turner, the Activities Director at Hamilton Mill helps tote the tables we use from the large meeting room across to the Conference Room and then helps put them away~! Lisa is also a Member of the Market and very active in promoting it in the Community! I am grateful to you all!

We still need YOU! The goal is to get enough folks on board so that we can rotate volunteer duties. Can you spare a few hours once a month? Without you as Members, the Market would not exist and now the Market needs your help!

Please click Volunteer Information for the Lilburn Market for the particulars! Thanks for your help!

Sarah Heath has also joined the Volunteers at the Hamilton Mill Market and will be starting with us soon! Thank you, Ladies!

… this and that …

Remember my “Bee Invasion” I told you about last week? After the Newsletter went out, I got an Urgent email from Vicky Fry of Fry Farm who informed me that those little midget Carpenter Bees are in fact Bumble Bees that are the best pollinators! She literally saved their little lives as I was plotting their demise. I spoke with Vicky and she suggested that I take a large box, cut a hole in the side of the box, facing away from the area I want to work and after dark, place the box upside down over their nest. This solution seems to be working and we are existing in peace! Vicky is truly a virtual ‘font of knowledge’ and I cannot count the times I have called her with one question about veggies, soil, chickens or gardening and she has patiently given me info and places to look for information! Thank you, Vicky! I appreciate your time, effort and information – and of course your hard work to offer us clean, nutrient-dense food for our tables!

I am headed out to get the yard mowed prior to the rain later this afternoon! The Black Lab just can’t seem to handle using the rider mower; he’s much more comfortable barking at it! (sigh)

I wish you all a happy day and a wonderful week!

It is time to say – thank you for taking the time to read this missive…

Champaign, OH:  Turn On Your Love Light

Turn on your lights, let it shine on me…
Turn on your love light, let it shine on me…
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine…(Turn On Your Love Light-Grateful Dead)

So, we have totally been feeling the love that you all have been shining on us as our market numbers grow and grow in customers, vendors, sales. We have been feeling the local love fest so much that it just makes us truly want to turn on our love light for you, each and every day!

Building trust, building a customer base, building a vendor base, building the love, is a long and steady practice that needs constant attention, constant care, constant nurturing.

What I am seeing at this lovely little local market is an amazing balance of customers to vendors to happiness. Our customers are a varied bunch from all ages, all wants, all needs, but with a common bond of wanting the best, wanting to keep it local, and trusting us to give them what they desire.

Our vendors are a varied bunch, as well. We have all types of vendors, all doing separate/different amazing things and bringing the market the best of the best, each and every week, in our desire to keep it local, building those bonds of trust, and trying to always give the customers what they desire.

I am lucky to be able to sit behind the scenes and watch this little local love fest all unfold. I see what the vendors all bring to the table, I talk with them, each and every week, I hear their ideas, I hear their excitement, I witness all of the goodness that they put in front of us, each week. We have varied vendors bringing you eggs…each different, each amazing, and each building a customer following.

We have a large amount of bakers who are all doing their own thing, baking to their own philosophies, offering you baked goods without all the added junk that you would get by purchasing a box of processed baked goods at a mass chain store.

We have meat producers who bring us the best of the best in the county and surrounding counties. The customer base for our local meat producers is staggering! That speaks volumes about the trust that has been built between vendor and customer.

Our growers are beginning to show up with more and more produce. We have an AMAZING base of growers who are growing in new and different ways. I am excited to see the mingling of the established farmers beside these young and up and coming farmers. They are all learning from each other but the common bond is that they deliver the highest quality of what they are producing.

Our herbs, flours, and spices and garlic are all from local, chemical free farms, doing all of the work, all on their own. Long hours, a belief in what they are doing, and building a huge customer following through educating the customer, letting product tastings do the talking, and knowing that their season is short, so the excitement builds, each spring and summer, with these amazing products!

We have over the top, local berry and asparagus farms that bring in their seasonal products that are at the height of their flavor and nutrition. If you want to know excitement, sit with me, behind the computer screen as asparagus/strawberry/raspberry seasons all unfold…it’s a frenzy to watch!!

Local dairy is the freshest you will find and arrives to us, each week, ready to meet the great customer demands!

Our local fresh water fish farm delivers to our market and the customers are pleased to have so many of the options that come with the freshwater fish!

We have several jam, honey, and maple syrup vendors, as well as sorghum molasses…all with huge customer followings, all different products, all ready to fill the need of each customer!

Hands down, we do LOCAL, we are LOCAL, we are growing in numbers, we show no signs of slowing down, our only vision is how can we move to the next level, how can we bring even more customers into this little local love fest? How do we always tell our loyal local lovelies how much we always, always, appreciate their business?

We are all in this, together. We all want local, we all want to share the local love, and we all want the market to exceed beyond our wildest imaginations.

So, take a bit of time, today, to plan your week. It is a holiday week which means it is going to get crazy for you. If you take a few quiet moments, now, to place your orders for your weekly needs and for your July 4th weekend needs, you will be happy, relieved, stress free, and ready to celebrate.

Turn on your love light while we turn on our love light. Together, we are making this little local love fest really happen!

Peace and Love,
Cosmic Pam

Check out their offerings from their Bulk Ground Buff to Steaks and Roasts! Delicious! Be sure and remove from grill or skillet at least one level from how you like your meat cooked! In other words, if you like it Medium, remove the meat when it reaching Medium Raw and let is sit covered for 10 minutes before serving! Turns out perfect every time!

Both Golden Farms and Rocky Acres offer fresh eggs from pastured chickens fed organic, soy and GMO free feed. Periodically Cara puts notes on the cartons to let you know what special treats her ‘girls’ have gotten in addition to their regular diet of bugs they find out in the pasture! Cute idea to let the children check out what the chickens who produce the eggs they have on their table are eating!

My Daily Bread Bruce and Dabrielle are in Wisconsin this week celebrating Dabrielle’s Uncle’s 93rd birthday! I trust you stocked up on her items! Dabrielle will return to the Markets next week with all of her offerings!

Marie of Bakery on Brooks has done it again! Hummingbird Bread! With some of the same ingredients as the famous Southern Hummingbird Cake, (pineapple, pecans, banana) this bread is a great Breakfast Bread or wonderful treat in the afternoon! Her Rolls, Paleo Bites and Cookies have all been a big hit on the Markets and all of us Gluten Free Folks appreciate her adventuresome spirit in creating wonderful treats that we can eat! I have to admit that her Chocolate Chip Cookies are truly my downfall! They are truly ‘made in heaven’!

In addition to Chicken Eggs, Cara of Golden Farms has Duck Eggs available! Get your order in early because there is a limited supply!

Jay and Patti of Dances With Bees have Honey offerings as well as some other great products! Use honey in your Lemonade for a great flavor! Great in Tea, also! I ordered a jar of Jay’s Golden Beeswax Food Grade Wood Finish this past week. My cutting boards and wooden utensils were in desperate need of conditioning! Check this product out and notice the picture that Jay posted! This stuff WORKS!

Patti makes some outstanding Natural Body Products from the honey and beeswax. Her Gardener’s Friend Soap works to get those ‘playin-in-the-dirt’ hands clean and keeps them soft. Fantastic product!

The Happy Cows belonging to Sam Jones of Cedar Rock Dairy continue to produce wonderful milk (for our pets)! The cream line on the jars these last couple of weeks has been impressive! Keep up the good work, ladies!

Rusty Repp of Little Tots Estate offers the sweetest goat milk I have had since I was a child, growing up in Ohio! The milk comes from Nigerian Dwarf Goats who are known to have the highest Butterfat of any milking goats! The Black Lab enjoys some everyday!

Recipes

Please, share your recipes with us on the Recipes tab. We’d all love to know how you use your Stones River Market products, so we can try it too! I am taking a break from recipes this week. If you have created a dish and want to share with everyone, please send it to me.

Our recipe this week is from Chef Jenny with JENuineHealth. The peppery arugula, sweet fruit, creamy goat cheese, and lemon vinaigrette make this a real crowd pleaser. It’s a great festive salad to serve on the Fourth of July!

Red, White, & Blue Salad

Ingredients

1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup olive oil
3 tbsp lemon, juice
2 tbsp agave or honey
2 tsp Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp poppy seeds
1 4 oz pkg goat cheese log, sliced into 8 slices *See Tips below.
1 cup panko bread crumbs or whole wheat bread crumbs
- olive oil, enough to line the bottom of your small fry pan
1 pkg arugula or mixed greens
1/2 cup mint, fresh, removed from stems
1 cup sprouts
4 small pears, unpeeled, seeded, cored, and sliced lengthwise in wedges
2 cups watermelon, large cubes
1 cup blueberries
1 pkg sprouts
2 pkgs Seeds of Success, Sweet & Salty

Procedure
1. *See Tips below for how to slice the goat cheese. Make sure the goat cheese is cold when you slice it. It may help to put it in the freezer for a couple minutes before you slice it.
2. Whisk egg in a small bowl and set aside.
3. Dip one goat cheese coin at a time in the beaten egg, and then coat it with the crumbs. Place it on a plate. Follow same procedure for the other 7 goat cheese medallions.
4. Place the plate of medallions in the freezer for 10 minutes to firm up before frying.
5. Combine olive oil, lemon juice, agave, mustard, salt, and poppy seeds in another small bowl. Whisk and set in the refrigerator.
6. Cover the bottom of a small non-stick fry pan with 1/4" of olive oil. Heat to medium. Gently fry two – three goat cheese medallions at a time. Remove and set on paper towels.
7. Combine the arugula, mint leaves, and sprouts together. Line each plate with the greens mixture.
8. Place 2 goat cheese medallions in the center of each bed of greens.
9. Arrange the pears, watermelon, and blueberries around the goat cheese medallions.
10. Sprinkle nuts over top and drizzle with the vinaigrette.

Servings: 4

Recipe Tips
1. Use a piece of dental flows to cut the goat cheese log into smooth circles. This is a tip I learned in culinary school.
2. You can use 2 packages of goat cheese if you want 4 goat cheese medallions per person.
3. If watermelon is not your thing, you can use strawberries instead.
4. Non-Vegetarian Option – Serve your favorite white fish on the side drizzled with the lemon vinaigrette.

I thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open!

Good Morning Marketgoers,

Thunderstorms and tomatoes, humidity and okra, burning heat and spicy peppers; if you weren’t already aware, Summer is officially here. That’s exciting news for us local-food lovers, as each week the market expands with new flavors and varieties, and we get to truly taste nature’s bounty. The market is open and getting yummier by the day. New offerings include…

  • Can you say Hardin Farms’ CANTALOUPE?!?!? Excuse my obvious excitement, but these are quite literally my favorite melons on the planet. Snag a melon and some of their peaches & cream sweet corn and taste why the Hardins are some of our favorite farmers around.
  • Fresh okra is back from Barnhill Orchards. I was raised a Yankee and never heard of okra until I moved down here. I was first taught that it was only for frying, which, while absolutely delicious, doesn’t quite compare to stewing it with tomatoes, in my humble opinion.
  • Kohlrabi kraut from Garden Works. This delicious, nutritious, and all-local fermented condiment goes great on grilled meats and morning omelettes.
  • Cajun spiced mixed nuts from Maison Terre. Created by Maison Terre staff and Food Club Coordinator Karl Heinbockel as a birthday gift for his sister, I’ve tasted these nuts and they are nothing short of addictive!

A few years ago it was discovered that one of our growers, Petit Jean Meats, was mislabeling out-of-state products as their own. When caught, they were banned from the market and got in a bit of legal trouble. There’s currently a pending court case against Petit Jean Meats and they’re looking for folks that bought their products because they thought they were local in 2010 and 2011. If you bought Petit Jean Meats in that timeframe and are interested in giving a statement, e-mail it to prosecutor contact Jeff Wieners at jeff.wieners@fsis.usda.gov.

Thanks for supporting local!
