This week due to the 4th of July Holiday, we are asking that all orders be picked up between 3 and 5pm on Friday, or the normal hours of pickup at the Hilldale Farmers Market for those of you that pick up there on Saturdays.

Farmer Rich is not sure if there will be strawberries on Friday due to all the rain and heat, but he will try pick some Friday morning if they are still in good shape.

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm,week of June 29 2014

Adding basil and eggplant this week.
Enough orders for beef came in that I can take an animal to the butcher this week.

This Saturday I am hosting a farm tour sponsored by the Ecological Farmers of Ontario, from 10 to 2. Theme: Garden Farming for a Bleak Post-carbon Future. I will be addressing the reasons why the food system we now rely on cannot hold fast and what small farms and urban backyards can do for their own needs as we get used to climate upset, energy scarcity and economic hardships like increasing unemployment, lower wages, food inflation. $10 each or $20/family to EFAO admission. https://efao.ca/upcoming-events/

Climate change?
“The selfish minority will over-exploit and ruin things for the future,” he told ThinkProgress. “So some kind of regulation is really essential — you can’t just leave things to the free market and hope that it will work out.”

Simply cooperating in everyday life is hard enough, but cooperating with future generations is a whole other challenge — and one that makes addressing climate change so difficult.

Why people are willing, or unwilling, to make present day sacrifices for future generations is the topic of a new study called “Cooperating With The Future” from researchers at Harvard and Yale. Published Wednesday in the journal Nature, the study looks at how people weigh decisions that are dependent on the continued help of subsequent generations, such as climate change and resource management.

Market News

Hello, all! I’ve not much to report this week. I’m out of the state, to put my mom to rest in the Florida Keys, a place she fell in love with late in life. I won’t be at the ALG pickups on Thursday, but our team of wonderful volunteers will keep everything running in my absence.

It is a holiday week, and a number of growers have taken the week off from ALG. I know a bunch of you are also out of town, so hopefully the balance of supply and demand is still good, even with the reduced number of items available. The volunteers will see you on Thursday, and I’ll see you when I return the following week. Enjoy your Independence Day!

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at city hall. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is open throughout the week here in Athens, and you can find more information about them here: www.athenslandtrust.org. The Washington-Wilkes Farmer’s Market in Washington is open every Saturday 9-12 behind the Washington Courthouse. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse. The other area markets I haven’t mentioned have yet to open for the season, so far as I know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Conyers Locally Grown:  The Market will be closed July 4.

Martin's Farmstand:  June 30 peas and strawberries

The online market is open for orders. We will start picking both sugar snap and hull peas for the stand tommorow. I kind of enjoy picking peas and they are so good. I especially find myself snacking on the snap peas. We will be open for strawberry picking at 7 AM tommorrow (Monday) morning. The heat makes them ripen fast- there are a lot of berries for tomorrow. Come to help me pick them as I can not pick them all myself. This is the mid-late part of strawberry season. There are still a lot of green berries so I believe that we will be still have some strawberries for another ten days or so. Daniel.

Cedar Grove Farm:  CSA Availability for 7/2 LOCATION & PICK-UP CHANGE!

Hi everyone,

We have some important news to share about our new downtown market location and pick-up change this week. Lindsey’s shop will be closed and all boxes (other than Oglethorpe) will be brought to the market. This will be our first week at our new location, Creature Comforts Brewery, which is located at 271 W Hancock Ave. It’s right on the corner of Pulaski and Hancock at the old Snow Tire. We will be set up in their lot adjacent to the building, but I’m sure the white tents will give us away. Parking is available in the lot across the street.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. We are both nervous and excited about moving to a new location and hope it works out for the best. It will be a great opportunity to check out the new brewery if you’re into that kind of thing.

See ya’ll on Wednesday!
