Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

October in Kentucky is just beautiful. I am enjoying the cooler weather and the leaves changing. Here is what we are doing here on the farm in the month of October.
We are running late on everything. I don’t know how I got behind, maybe I never got caught up from the summer. We are making a dibbler to make planting garlic and onions easier. It will take us a good long day to plant 16 pounds of garlic and 20 pounds of onions. We are plotting our revenge on the rabbits in the garden who ate all of our kale, lettuce, cabbage and mustard that we put out earlier in the fall. We are still planting in the high tunnel lots of spinach, carrots, radishes, beets, lettuce, kale, and swiss chard. Our lambs are due to go to the processor this week and we are anticipating ground lamb for sale in the next few weeks. Busy, busy time of the year with so much to do, and things to get into the ground before we cannot anymore.
Plus we are putting up our Greenhouse next weekend. We would love more help to come out and tackle this with us. I promise you a fun day with lots of great food to boot.
See you on Friday,
Angela

Florida Suncoast Locally Grown:  New Grower and Products On Line!

Good Morning Florida Suncoasters!

Just a short note to let you know that we have a new small farmer listing on Florida Suncoast Locally Grown market.
Starting this week, Betty Fasig of Duette has some great veggies growing in her hydroponic garden, and several items are on line. As her crop ripens, she will be adding them on line.
So check out the market several times a week for availability. She has added green and yellow beans today! Supplies at first will be limited, so shop early!
This is the start of the growing season here in central Florida, so you will continue to see our market products selection grow!
Thanks for supporting small farms!

South Cumberland Food Hub:  Time to Order Local Food!

Good Morning from the South Cumberland Food Hub. It’s time to order your local food for the week.

We have sweet potatoes from McAlister Farms available now. They are great quality and store well. We’ll only be going down to McAlister’s once a month due to the cost of picking up there, so if you would like a standing weekly order of sweet potatoes just let me know and I’ll be sure to have it for you.

We’re open till noon today. Have a great day!

CSA Farmers Market:  Cabbage, Carrot and Potato Soup

Submitted by Racheal Yonkman

This is a very simple recipe and freezes well.

Original recipe makes 6 servings
4 large carrots, thinly sliced
2 large potatoes, thinly sliced
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1/4 medium head green cabbage, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, smashed
6 cups chicken stock
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon salt

Combine the carrots, potatoes, onion, cabbage, garlic, chicken stock, olive oil, thyme, basil, parsley, salt, and pepper in a stock pot over medium-high heat; bring to a simmer and cook until the carrots are tender, about 20 minutes. Transfer to a blender in small batches and blend until smooth.

Joyful Noise Acres Farm:  Important notices.

Please put your orders in as the market closes tonight.

If you are no longer ordering milk, Sam would like to either purchase your jars from you for $3.30 each or return them to you. The storage room is overflowing with jars and many of them are not being used. Please let me know if you want to sell your jars, have them returned to you, or if you plan to resume ordering milk in the near future.

Joyful Noise Acres Farm will have fresh chicken available this Thursday afternoon. We will have plenty of whole birds for those of you that want to get the freezer stocked for the winter. We will have one more processing in November for the remaining chickens and the ducks.

Georgia Farm to Table has beautiful vegetables available again this week along with several extras including lady peas and peanuts.

Blessings,
Mary Beth

Market News

The big news this week is the long awaited return of Doug’s Wild Alaskan Salmon is upon us! After another successful summer hand-fishing in the waters off Alaska, Doug and his family have returned with their catch. You’ll find that they’ve updated their listings (In the “Fish” subcategory under “Meat”), so have at it! I’ve been waiting for this week for a quite a while — I ran out of my stash long ago.

Some of you have already taken advantage of the many seedlings available for your fall gardens. I always say the fall is my favorite time to garden in Athens, even though many people shut their gardens down as the first frost approaches. There are five dozen varieties of veggie and herb seedlings listed this week, which is more than you’ll find and most garden centers this time of year.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is open throughout the week here in Athens, and you can find more information about them here: www.athenslandtrust.org. The Washington-Wilkes Farmer’s Market in Washington is open every Saturday 9-12 behind the Washington Courthouse. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse. The other area markets I haven’t mentioned have yet to open for the season, so far as I know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Northeast Georgia Locally Grown:  Locally Grown - Availability for October 15th, 2013

Hey Local Food Lovers,

Fall is in the air, and the leaves are just beginning to change. After a wee cold snap last weekend, it looks like we still have quite a few farms with peppers and squash and other items that either were up on hill away from the frost, covered, or in a greenhouse. Yes, believe it or not we got frost up here in the mountains. Thank goodness for farmers who baby their plants late into the season so we can continue to enjoy warm weather crops usually up until the really cold frosts in November. But enjoy all you can now. We’re just weeks away from colder weather.

We’ve got a brand new FARM to introduce to the market this week. They are called Mountain Sweet Honey and they are based out of Toccoa, GA. If you can’t guess from the name, they MAKE HONEY. Or the bees make the honey that is, and they collect it so you can eat it on your biscuits. I’ve noticed over the years, that if I put on the counter both jam and honey for biscuits in the morning, my wife goes with the honey every time. Then sometimes the second biscuit gets jam.

Buy some Honey this week. We always like our new growers to feel nice and welcome. They have 4 different sizes, ranging from 16oz all they way up to 5lbs.

Also look out this week for Smart Chick Farms who has some new pork listed. We may have to call them Smart Chick and Piglet Farms. Also, Jumpin Goat Coffee is back after a break. Drink something warm on these windy chilly days ahead.

Well, that’ll do for this week. Hope everyone has a terrific week. And don’t forget to….

EAT WELL,

Justin, Chuck, Teri and Andrew
